Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a white disc with a blue central disc surmounted by a maroon cross crosslet on which is centered a vertical gold staff; a gold serpent is entwined about the staff and cross.  Connecting the crosslets are four gold triangles with the points extending to the edge of the white disc.  Attached to the bottom of the disc is a red scroll inscribed "BEYOND EXCELLENCE" in gold letters.

Symbolism
The colors maroon and white are those of the Army Medical Department.  The color blue denotes achievement or excellence and red in the form of the red cross is a worldwide recognized symbol for medical aid.  The cross, with the addition of the crosslets, alludes to the unit's augmentation mission.  The staff and serpent refer to the staff of Aesculapius, the ancient symbol associated with medicine.  The four gold points and the arms of the cross suggest eight points of the compass, alluding to the unit's mobility.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 13 August 1985.
